stoveCaleb Josiah is pleased to offer an authentic reproduction of an original, early 1900’s, ornate cast iron slab sided stove, the rarity of which is detailed in the ‘Anatomy of a Hut’ section at www.shepherdhuts.co.uk/page4.htm. The stove has been modified to make it more user friendly and efficient. In days gone by, stoves would have been commonplace within Shepherd Huts and afforded its occupants rest bite from the bitter cold and bleak winters.

As the nights drew in, Shepherds would stoke their fire until the stove glowed ‘cherry red’ before closing the Hut door behind them and returning to tend to their flock. At dusk and guided only by the moonlight, the Shepherd, with sickly lambs afoot, would retire to the inner warmth and sanctuary of the Hut. Here, the Shepherd would likely contemplate the days events, diarise their findings, plan for tomorrow, enjoy a hot drink fresh from a cast iron kettle and sometimes etch their thoughts or feelings, often about the miserable weather, into the wood panelling set within the framework of the Hut. Before going to sleep on a bed of straw the Shepherd would open the stable door and leave the top section ajar, exposing the Hut interior and its inhabitants to the elements. By early morning the last of the glowing embers had all but died out and the biting morning frost was mother-nature’s way of providing a wake up call and the impetus for the Shepherd to, once again, go about their daily routine and tend to their flock.

This beautiful reproduction stove is a necessary accompaniment to any Caleb Josiah Shepherd Hut and an absolute must for the discerning buyer. Cast from 16 individual parts, the sides effortlessly slot together and all components are affixed in place using eleven screws and retaining nuts.
